Medium Trick
Zoom in a bit on the War Map and you will see the score of each enemy.

Once you are on the War map, if you zoom in a bit, under the name of each enemy city you will see the points it is carrying in the war, which always gives you a clue as to whether it is an active oponent or not.

It's often very useful for choosing who to attack without having to look at the battle report.
